Barnali´s death unites women of two states
By Our Correspondent

Agartala, August 08: The murder of Barnali Deb in
Network Travels campus on the fateful night of 13
July, has brought the women activists of Assam and
Tripura together to fight against the atrocities on
children and women.
A two member team of Nirjatan Birodhi Oikyo Manch of
Assam arrived here in connection with Barnali murder
case.
The Manch is a platform of 55 organisations of Assam
spearheading the agitation programme in the wake of
Barnali murder. General secretary of the Manch Sumitra
Hazarika and Lucy Neog, who also happens to be a
journalist today met member secretary of Tripura
Women´s Commission Meenakshi Sen Bandopadhyaya and
discussed the issues relating to the murder. They will
also talk to the family members and parents of the
child and then meet the press today.
"There is more in the case than what are being said by
the authorities. We would like expose these untold
stories", said Sumitra Hazarika. She also apprehended
that the report of the DNA test sought by the Assam
Police could be manipulated. Hazarika also indicated
that her organisation would like to form a united
platform with similar organisations of Tripura to
fight atrocities on children and women in both the
state. It may be mentioned here that though police
arrested the four murderers within hours, the women and
students organisations of Assam are carrying out
relentless protest programmes demanding capital
punishment for the murderers of Barnali. Already two
conseceutive bandhs were called in Guwahati. In
Tripura also some organisations staged demonstrations
and students brought out silent processions.
