Hi
I have pasted below a message by Victor of ActionAid India regarding the proposed political convention of disabled people. I request Sarai to spread a word about it.
Thanks
Meenu
Dear all,
We have been referring persons with disabilities as unseen, unheard, unaccounted, invisible and sizable minority of this country. They have been silent for a long time which attributed to powerlessness, disempowerment, social seclusion, deprivation, marginalisation, dehumanisation, degradation and astercisation of this most marginalised section of our society.
This is the right time to assert our rights, demands, opinion and thoughts before the country particularly to the major political parties of this country.
Disability Rights Group [DRG] is organising a national political convention
on 20th of March at 2.00 PM
at FICCI auditorium, Federation house, Than Sen Marg, New Delhi 1.
Representatives from the major political parties of this country are expected to attend this convension. Issues affecting the lives of millions of disabled people of this country will be discussed. A strategy will be prepared with regard to participation of disability sector in coming general or parliamentary elections. Many options regarding getting in to political process of this country will be discussed. Options may include formation of a separate political party, encouraging individuals with disabilities to contest for elections, influencing political parties to include disability agenda in their election manifesto, influencing political parties to issue tickets to persons with disabilities to contest for elections from their party, voting so on and so forth.
It is essential that disability sector must get in to political process of this country. Unless persons with disabilities get in to political process of this country and demonstrate our strength and unity to the people of this country in general and political parties in particular, the issues of this segment will remain unaddressed. The fact of the matter is that time has gone that somebody else makes decisions on lives of persons with disabilities but time has come to take charge of our own lives by our selves.
Could I kindly request you to attend or send persons with disabilities to this convention and help us to demonstrate our [disability sector] strength and unity before the major political parties of this country and public in general?
Could I kindly request you to circulate this information as widely as possible so that more people from disability sector can attend and represent the disability sector for the country.
A line of confirmation from your side is highly appreciated
Look forward to hearing from you soon.
thanks
regards
Victor.

Hi,
Erikka Johanson is looking for an intership in India in July 2004. Below
I've pasted a statement from her of her interests and concerns. If anyone
knows of an organisation that might be interested in having her an intern
please do forward this to them so that they might contact her. Her e-mail
id is:
Thanks so much.
regards,
Shilpa
My name is Erikka Johanson and I am a student at Knox College in the
United States. I am studying to eventually become a midwife and am very
interested in cross cultural perspectives on women's health care and
birthing practices. I am currently working on independent research to
further understand these issues and their cultural implications in
India. I am interested in the structure of public and private health
care systems in India and their effects on women's health care. My main
interests lie with the prenatal and postnatal care of women, and in
particular, questions about the number of women who receive prenatal
care, the options available for women who cannot afford prenatal care,
and the primary health providers who care for women during pregnancy.
Further, issues in health education such as family planning, the need
for prenatal and postnatal care, and awareness of the need for annual
breast and gynecological exams, also intrigue me. I am looking to
volunteer in women's clinics and/or birth centers in order to get a
first hand understanding of these issues. I plan on being in India for
the month of July 2004. For logistical convenience, I would prefer
programs located in Marharashtra, but will certainly not limit myself to
this area.

We would like to invite you for the first public
screening of our film:
Title : Breaking barriers

Communication
JNU New Campus
Aruna Asaf Ali Road
New Delhi.

Time : 6.30 p.m.

Bhatnagar

This film deals with the issues of a barrier free
environment for the disabled and the accessibility of

Shivani Gupta and Rajinder Singh, the film raises
pertinent questions like why don't we see so many
disabled people around us ? Where are they?
This film screening will be followed by a
Czechslovakian film (Jumping over the Puddle).
Hoping to see all of you over there. The film
screenings will be followed by an open discussion.
Thanks
Anamika
