Dear Friends,

Every year, under the aegis of the PUKAR Monsoon, we organize a series of inter-active workshops and discussions for undergraduate college students to engage them on specific themes and issues related to Mumbai city. We would be grateful if you passed on this year’s invitation to students you know who may be interested.

Warm regards,

The PUKAR Team.

 The PUKAR Monsoon 2004:

Write an audio-novel using Mumbai’s special lingo, produce a radio-feature on its “bhelpuri” Hindi, create a photo-essay on typologies, scripts and signs or express your multi-lingual self and become a translator!

You can do all this as a participant in “The PUKAR MONSOON 2004 – Language and the City” - a series of inter-active workshops, docshops and discussions to explore our city’s linguistic diversity and its unique ability of creating new forms of communication.

PUKAR annually organizes the PUKAR Monsoon – a series of lectures, workshops, presentations and activities – from May to August every year, in which undergraduate students address a specific theme through a variety of creative approaches and by creating their own texts and artifacts representing their own point of view. PUKAR Monsoon was conceived to engage younger voices that are often neglected as spaces for serious reflection on our city and society.

The PUKAR Monsoon 2004 will be held from 20th April right through August 2004 in the form of eight sessions of about three days each to be held every fortnight. Students can sign – up for as many of the sessions depending on their interest and time commitment. Each participant will produce some kind of text (audio-novel, radio-program, sound installation, photo-essay, book, poem) and these will be presented to Mumbai’s public and media at the end of the program during a two-day student conference on the theme. The Monsoon is open for all students in undergraduate colleges in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

A PUKAR Monsoon 2004 e-discussion list will be formed once the participants register. This will provide logistical information on all sessions. To register, please e-mail your name, college and educational background (in brief) to pukarmonsoon2004 at yahoo.co.in.

For further inquiries write at the above e-address or call 022-22077779 or 9820404010 between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

 Previous PUKAR Monsoons:

The theme selected for PUKAR Monsoon 2002, held in July and August 2002 in eight local colleges, was “The City at Work: Livelihoods and Ways of Belonging”. Reflection on the history and economics of everyday life in the city help students cultivate critical sensibilities about the market, at a pre-professional stage in their lives. We used the idea of livelihood and work as the entry point for student participation in small documentation projects, on how class and cultural in identities are changing in the context of globalisation in Mumbai.

The theme selected for PUKAR Monsoon 2003 was “On Cities, On Water”. It sought to enable young people to develop a critical understanding of these and other relationships between cities and water through facilitating debate and reflection, encouraging artistic, intellectual and creative _expression, and developing hands-on skills in documenting the political and cultural implications of the many connections between cities and water. The PUKAR Monsoon 2003 began with the DOC-SHOP – an eight-day student workshop for students held from 19-27 May 2003 – and continued with pedagogic activities in undergraduate colleges throughout Mumbai in July and August 2003 and ended with a week-long PUKAR Monsoon Symposium of film screenings, presentations and panel discussions on cities and water.
