Rajendra Yadav, famous litterateur recounts his childhood days when they used to receive Kalyan regularly at home and no one used to read it. He remembers once having refused the vendor to receive it. The vendor laughed and asked him to keep it otherwise it would be a sin on his part. He asked him not to pay for it and that the vendor would pay himself. Thus, there was a religious feeling associated not only with buying but also selling it. Such a feeling would not have been associated with any other Hindi magazine. The large distribution of Kalyan is not only due to its contents but also the religious sentiments associated with it. This was confirmed when other readers of Kalyan in Gorakhpur and Devariya were interviewed. In the views of Professor Sadanand Shahi, Director, Premcahnd Sahitya Sansthan, Kalyan, once used to be very popular among the ladies of middle class families. It is not so now. There are reasons like changing readers’ tastes. Now ladies prefer magazines like
Sarita or Griha Shobha and other magazines related to ladies. Television has also made an impact on reading habits of people. They prefer viewing programmes on the variety of channels available on the TV. We can conclude that the contents of Kalyan may not have changed much but certainly the readership graph of Kalyan does’nt remains the same.
