"On page 58, Dash reproduces a British officer’s three-fold
classification of Thugs (1915): ‘‘(George) Stockwell’s categories
were the predominantly Muslim Etawah and Allyghur Thugs, who lived
on large landed estates under the protection of various rajahs; the
more numerous Hindu Lodhee Thugs of Cawnpore; and the gangs formerly
based in Sindouse and Gwalior, who were the most numerous of all.’’

Tweak a phrase or two, and you’re left with the social composition
of post-Mandal politics in Uttar Pradesh."
