Popular discourse today reiterates ubiquitously that the India's rise as
global capitalist powerhouse has much to do with its colonial history,
and specifically, with the implementation of the rule of law and
contract in the 19th century. Drawing from a forthcoming book, Hedging
Bets, which charts the history of law, capitalism and market governance
in colonial India, this lecture will address what we forget when we
remember Indian capitalism as seamless transition into modernity.
