Some thoughts:

1. Pratibha Patil is a conservative who does not deserve to talk against the veil. She is herself a model 'Bhartiya Nari', a practitioner of the fundamnentalisms of everyday hindu-wife/bahu life. Not that much can be said about the outgoing man, who quotes from Manusmriti.

2. Modesty Dresses assume meaning only in the context of an impinging male gaze that
violates the individuality of the woman. It is only after the male gaze is seen as 'natural; that the burden of modesty is shifted onto women.

3. Critique of religion has taken an unfortunate blow, given the strange discourse of
secularism that is afraid to challenge orthodoxies of everyday life.

4. The hindu-nari's life is full of fundamentalisms that go unchallenged.

5. The progressive intellectuals are afraid to critique oppressive practices in Islam. Why is it
difficult to critique the Koran? It is also difficult to critique hindu oppressive practices. And these seem to have become less obvious and less visible to people.

6. Why is there no talk of sexual freedom for women??
