Twenty-Four Men So Roughly that All May Die -- No One Present Who Dares to
Order the Troops to Fire.

CALCUTTA, July 2. -- In the fighting which took place yesterday in the
suburb of Chitpore between the police and the rioters, during which the
former were compelled to fire on the latter, many policemen were injured. A
party of twenty-four members of the native police was surrounded by a mob
and so roughly handled that all of them are expected to die of the injuries
they received.
