Thiruvananthapuram: The Theeradesa Mahila Vedi has accused the Industries
Department of trying to absolve the management of the Ashapura clay factory
at Pallithura of the charges of pollution.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, Vedi leaders Freesca
Kurisappan, Maglin Peter, Pushparani and Vimaladas said water and air
pollution caused by the factory had made life difficult for people in the
neighbourhood. They alleged that the plant had been functioning for over six
months without adhering to the conditions laid down by the Pollution Control
Board. "Many people are suffering from breathing difficulties and skin
ailments. The emissions from the factory cover the whole area and water
sources are polluted."

Ms. Kurisappan said the government could not ignore the plight of the
people. "We are not against development or industrial ventures. But when
hundreds of people are affected by pollution, the authorities should take
action," she said.

She said the factory had been permitted to start operations without
conducting a survey to assess the environmental impact. The Vedi submitted a
memorandum to the government demanding that the factory be allowed the
resume operation only after ensuring that it meets the pollution norms.

Vedi leaders will stage a 24-hour dharna before the Secretariat on Thursday
to press their demand.
