Culture Café, Centre for Media and Cultural Studies Presents

The New Media Series

A set of provocative presentations and discussions

about our relationships with new media and technologies

This week: The Digital Avatar by Nishant Shah

August 21, 2009, 4-6 pm, Room 4

With the proliferation of digital cyberspace, there has been a need to
translate the self into various digital avatars. The avatars have been
severally treated as extensions of the self, or translations of the self,
place-holders of the self, or indicators of presence. The workshop looks at
the different text and visual avatars in different platforms of social
interaction and networking in five different internet locations to explore
how they shape our understanding of the self.

Nishant Shah is the Director for Research at the Centre for Internet and
Society, Bangalore. After completing his doctoral work at The Centre for
Culture and Society, Nishant became an Asia Fellow, stationed at Shanghai
University, exploring the relationships between internet technologies,
bodies and cities. He has also worked as an information architect and a
cyber culture consultant with corporate and civil society organisations like
Yahoo!, and Khoj Studios, as well as with different local government bodies.
His primary interests are in questions of technology mediated identity,
social transformation, and political engagement.
