Crackdown: Police detains 150 youth

Srinagar, July 11: In a major crack down on protesters and stone
pelters, police has detained nearly 150 youth for allegedly
participating in anti-government protests and stone pelting during the
past fortnight across valley.
 Sources told Greater Kashmir that following the widespread protests
against the killings of teenagers including a woman in CRPF and police
action, scores of youth have been detained in the Srinagar city.
 They said nearly 40 youth had been detained in the old city and
arrests have also taken in other parts of the city.
 The police also held several youth in north and south Kashmir for
stone-pelting and holding protests during these days.
 Sources said police also rounded up nearly 40 youth in Sopur town,
after the killing of two youth by paramilitary CRPF troopers last
month. A police official while wishing anonymity said that 25 of them
were released and handed over to parents instructing.
 The police has also detained more than 30 youth in the Islamabad town
particular in the volatile areas of Malkhnag, Cheeni Chowk, Reshi
bazaar areas during the nocturnal raids in past two weeks
 The locals of Bandipore and Handwara towns also alleged that police
was summoning the youth to police stations, after the protests.
 The central government has also dire cted state government to go
tough on trouble makers.
 SP city (North), Shoket Hussain said about 30- 40 identified stone
pelters had been detained. “We have evidence against them. They were
photographed during stone pelting. Some of them were released on
bail,” he added.
 Pertinently, the union home secretary, Gopal K Pillai, had during his
recent visit asked the state government to arrest the “trouble
makers.”
