Debesh Goswami: Uprooted

An eternal immigrant, the artist between two worlds can consider himself exiled
or uprooted: the series, Uprooted (2005) realized in Moscow, an installation of
shoes. The simplicity of the arrangements of his recent installations where one
can see the influence of the Anglo Saxon School and Art Povera.

Bread, the material Goswami used in his recent sculptures and performances,
belongs to the concept of vital movement. It is symbolic, as it is the essential
base of the nourishment from which the body derives energy.As in his series
A place called body, previously exhibited at Gallery Helene Lamarque, (Paris)
expresses Debesh's universal vision, where imagery and identiity are superseded
by a common need for spirituality.In his photographs, he evoking a
spiritual union
between the body, material and history.

Since Debesh's last exhibition at the Indian museum in Kolkata, 2006, he has
been exploring the theme of alimentetion- physical and spiritual -
illustrated by
an installation entitled Bread dome that makes up the central work in Debesh
Goswami's upcoming exhibition at the Lalitkala Academy. The exhibition will be
open to the public on Monday, July 19 from 5 to 8 pm. The artist will
be present.
Debesh Goswami was born in 1965 and has lived in Paris since 1995. he starts his
study in sculpture, at the Rabindra-Bharati University of Calcutta,
India. In 1995,
he receives “the French government scholarship for the young artists” which
allows him to leave for France and to continue his research in the field of the
sculpture and the installation. In 2001, Debesh Goswami obtains his Doctorate
of Visual arts at the University Rennes 2 entitled “the moulding process in the
contemporary sculpture: technique and time». And in 1996, Visiting Fellowship,
National Academy of Fine Arts, Poznan (Poland). He has exhibited internationally
since 1996 in galleries and museums in the Europe, United States, and Japan.
Chine, India. His work has been included in major international biennials: the
2nd Liverpool Biennale (2002), Biennale European Nîme, France, Asian biennale
Dhaka ,Museum of Contemporary art, Moscow and Indian museum (kolkata).He is
professor of Rennes Art college, (France).
