Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Swathantra Matsya Thozhilali Federation
(KSMTF) has appealed to the government to include provisions to ensure
the livelihood security and traditional rights of fish workers before
presenting the revised version of the Kerala Inland Fishery Bill in
the Assembly.

A press note quoting KSMTF State president T. Peter demanded that the
right be vested exclusively with fish workers to register boats, nets
and inboard engines in order to prevent others from appropriating the
sector. It also demanded that the Bill be called the Kerala Inland
Fisheries Bill to bring aquaculture farmers also under its purview.
The federation stressed the need to provide for an appellate authority
and to rename the panel mentioned in section 41 as Inland Fisheries
Management Committee. It submitted a memorandum to Fisheries Minister
S. Sarma, highlighting these demands. — Special Correspondent
