An evening that raises a toast to one of India’s most iconic filmmakers, Guru Dutt. An evening that chronicled the relationship between Guru Dutt and his writer, assistant director, friend and right hand man Abrar Alvi.

The event- a dramatized rendition of the book, ‘Ten Years With Guru Dutt: Abrar Alvi’s Journey’, by Sathya Saran, presenting a multi-media experience where the moving picture and the still tableau combine with the words of a chronicler to recreate the passion and poetry of the life and times of Guru Dutt, director, actor, producer, and friend. Scenes from the films will link the chapter extracts from the book to a theatrical tableau where the roles played by Meena Kumari, Waheeda Rehman and Guru Dutt, will be recreated briefly on stage before leading to the film on screen. This is a first ever attempt to create a 360 experience of the book. well known stage actors play the lead female roles for the dramatic rendition, produced and directed by Meenu Namit of Just Imagine Theatre Productions and writer and journalist Sathya Saran.

VLCC are makeup partners, Entice are jewelry partners, designers Shantanu and Nikhil, and Sabyasachi Mukherjee have provided the clothes that will recreate the look of the characters from the films on stage.

The book
Ten Years with Guru Dutt: Abrar Alvi’s Journey by Sathya Saran, Published by Penguin India. Also in Hindi, translated by Praveen Singh, published by Rajpal, India

A chance encounter with Abrar Alvi resulted in a series of meetings that spanned two years of note taking and ten years of tumultuous film history. Abrar Alvi, old, sick and somewhat disappointed with life, was happy to escape into the ten best years of his life, spent as writer, assistant director and friend and right hand man of the iconic director Guru Dutt. The stories narrated come from the long silent treasure chest of his memory, but are mint fresh in the narration. The memories are sad, happy, startling and dramatic, and the book thus resulting is nothing short of a dramatic script in itself.

Incidents that could not have been public and were the private knowledge of two colleagues at their creative best, moments in the making of some of our best films, interactions with some of our greatest stars, are all part of the book. A moving document of an era that was magical and golden in the history of Indian cinema, nay world cinema. Written in two voices, Abrar’s own and the author’s, the narration is tempered with her commentary and remarks that add perspective and give the stories a time frame.
