*In each image one must know what is being spoken*

* Our task is to interpret the images and sounds of our times***

Indian cinema has a kaleidoscopic history reflecting its rich and diverse
culture even while constantly updating and redefining its scope as new
meanings and ideas are generated in the passage of time. It has been an
attempt to visually portray its multiple and plural histories - of
folklore, myths, facts and fantasies by weaving together the many aesthetic
expression of dance, drama, music, literature and poetry infusing it not
only with a nostalgia for a bygone past - its glories and mirth, its
triumphs and defeats but also struggling to grapple with modern
aspirations, its pangs and angst, without losing its quintessence. Indian
cinema is a representation of its struggle with itself to recast
traditional values in a modern idiom so as to accommodate its innumerable
variations of differences and visions, searching for fusion and synthesis.

While many popular film magazines flourish in English and the vernacular,
the magazines that attempted in-depth analysis of films at a deeper
socio-political cultural connect in the cinematic narratives, be it art or
popular, have brought in rigorous film analysis and have left behind huge
reservoir of refreshing thoughts and ideas from great film scholars across
the country which forms the basis of continuity for the emerging film
scholars and film critics.

Deep Focus – a film quarterly has been one such attempt that provided a
space for conversation, dialogue and debate on cinema in the process
carving for itself a unique space as one of Asia’s foremost Journal on
Cinema. Since its inception it has brought out twenty four issues exploring
the entire gamut of cinematic expressions across the country. What is most
satisfying is that people love Deep Focus & after being dormant for a
while, many of its readers and contributors are coming forward with renewed
vigor to continue its publication.

Now Deep Focus in its new avatar and keeping its original perspective in
focus, through its articles and interviews will explore the craftsmanship
of all the professionals involved in the process of film making. It will
carry well researched film reviews, book reviews and in depth film analysis
covering all the regions and all the languages in which films are made in
India. It will also cover various genres and aspects connected with film
media and interesting developments in World Cinema. It will also provide a
forum for deeper and dynamic engagement with the current debates on form,
content, the grammar of cinema and censorship.

We welcome articles, film reviews, book reviews and interviews with film
directors/artistes/technicians. Going further Deep Focus will organize
periodic seminars and conferences on feature/documentary and animation
films inviting scholars, film directors, film producers, artistes and
technicians.

Deep focus team looks forward to your continued support!
