Hello all,

Continuing our series on the Ramayana in conversation, Kiski Kahani (
www.kiskikahani.openspaceindia.org) and Open Space invite you to coffee and
a lecture with M V Bhaskar on Saturday 25, August at 6:00pm at Open Space,
Pune.

Bhaskar will talk about his multi-level engagement and how the different
approaches coalesce into a new whole, dwelling in particular on the 7
different versions of the Ramayana murals now extant in Tamilnadu, and on
how they compare with each other. He will also explore the idea that each
version of the Ramayana is in itself many Ramayanas, assimilating, as it
has, a range of textual and oral sources, highlighting this conjecture in
the context of the Sri Ranganatha Ramayana (Telugu, 16th Century), the
Ramayana narrative painted in two of the temples of Tamilnadu by the Telugu
rulers of the state in the pre-modern era.

Bhaskar has also been involved in an exhaustive documentation of Tamil
Brahmi stone inscriptions from all the known 33 sites on behalf of the
Central Institute of Classical Tamil and has produced and directed a
documentary on the origin and history of Tamil language entitled *uur*. He
is an imaging specialist in scientific publishing.

*M V Bhaskar is an IFA grantee and works with alternative forms of
reconstruction and restoration of the Ramayana mural paintings on the
ceiling of the Venugopla Parthasarathy temple at Chengam, Tamilnadu, (
www.chengammurals.org) He began his involvement with mural paintings in
2003 as part of a project to document and archive the mural paintings of
Tamilnadu. Since then Bhaskar has been continuously working with this
subject in the many roles that the subject and his own experience and
skills permit – as a writer, illustrator, archivist, film maker, and
inevitably, a researcher. *

*Venue: Open Space,B 301, Kanchanjunga Building, Kanchan Lane, Pune*

*Time: 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm*

*This lecture series is free and open to everyone. *
