How philology - the discipline of making sense of texts, in the widest
possible sense of those terms -orients itself to the world outside the
text, and to what extent, conversely, that world shapes philological
concerns and practices is a core question of “Liberation Philology.” The
lecture will address, somewhat unevenly, three matters: balancing the
claims of the inside and the outside of the text; supplementing
postcolonialism with postcapitalism, or a concern over past wrongs with a
concern for future rights; and finding way to meet, from our small
philological locations as specific intellectuals, the obligation to
construct “a planet-wide inclusivist community.”

Sheldon Pollock is currently Arvind Raghunathan Professor of South Asian
Studies at Columbia University. He is the author or editor of numerous
books, including the Language of the Gods in the World of Men: Sanskrit,
Culture, and Power in Premodern India, and Literary Cultures in History:
Reconstructions from South Asia. He is general editor of the Murty
Classical Library of India and of Historical Sourcebooks in Classical
Indian Thought. In 2009 he was awarded the Presidential Certificate of
Honour for Sanskrit, Government of India, and in 2009, the Padma Shri.
