Picturing Dickens
In colaboration with Film London and Kala Ghoda Festival
7-12 February, then touring other cities
Over 20 countries worldwide from Albania to Zimbabwe are participating in our Dickens film programme which includes silent versions of Oliver Twist and brand new documentaries from Film London. A collection of seven films based on or inspired by Charles Dickens will be screened in all major cities.

WHAT WOULD DICKENS WRITE TODAY?

Writers across the world are gathering in a series of live literature events to consider how Dickens would fit into today's literary circles. The British Council in India has invited contemporary Indian writers in English — especially those whose writing dwells around cities and urban landscapes — to contribute pieces on what they feel Dickens would write today. The writings will be posted online and discussions encouraged. Those who will write include Amit Chaudhuri, Neel Mukherjee, Anita Nair and Chandrahaas Choudhury.

AFTER DICKENS

In collaboration with Penguin India
We are holding an all-India creative writing competition in collaboration with publishers Penguin India to encourage writers between the ages of 16 to 21 to submit a creative piece on Dickens.
Entries can be poetry, short stories, reportage, and writers can submit up to two pieces of work, maximum length of 500 words. Each piece must be given a title and must be in English. It should be inspired by Dickens or be Dickensian in flavor. It could be a retelling of a Dickens work—it could even be an account of the Victorian writer visiting an Indian city. The idea is to be imaginative, creative and inspired.
Entries must not have been published or broadcast previously, and must be the original work of the author. The best 3 entries shall be uploaded on the British Council’s blog.
Entries close on 20 February 2012 and winners shall be notified by 28 February.
