CREATIVE DIALOGUE OF CITIES by AUDRIUS STONYS

Films about Vilnius by four, National Culture award-winning directors representing two generations

"Vilnius is a city unusually suitable for cinematography. The unique cultures of many nations came together here, to disseminate onwards.
There was Polish Vilnius, Jewish Vilnius and Lithuanian Vilnius. Forming and drawing the setting of Vilnius was heart-felt.
The history written in its cobblestone streets and the bricks of its buildings have caught the eye of many cinematographers.
Every artist saw Vilnius in his or her own way and, by the same, confessed a love for this city.
The programme suggests taking a look at Vilnius from the eyes of four artists, all laureates of the National Culture award.

Laikas eina per miestą ‘Time passes through the city’, the film by Almantas Grikevičius (1966), lets us see Vilnius as eternal, as ever-changing, carrying its marks of history along with itself.

Praėjusios dienos atminimui ‘In the Memory of a Day Gone By’, the film by Šarūnas Bartas (1990), lights Vilnius up in the colours of nostalgia in autumn.

Dešimt minučių prieš Ikaro skrydį ‘Ten Minutes Before the Flight of Icarus’, the film by Arūnas Matelis (1990), walks you through the same small streets of theUžupis neighbourhood that an odd fellow named Miša walks accompanied by the spirit of Vilnius.

Griuvėsių Apaštalas ‘Apostle of Ruins’, the film by Audrius Stonys (1992), shows us Vilnius as Georgian thinker and mystic Alexander Oboladze sees it.

These four glances are like four love letters to the city of Vilinus.

I will present the films during this event. The talk will be on how the city has changed and how the tradition for telling a tale about the city has formed once it was possible to video tape the eternally transforming spirit of the city.

MY CITY

Film-making workshops, both creative and practical, will be held for five days. Participants of these workshops will discuss themes and visualisations reflecting their city. They will film their impressions of the city and present them in group discussions with the Master who is heading the workshop.

The effort will be to grasp how to reflect and record a city while avoiding touristic superficiality.
How is the portrait of a city composed? How can the lens of a camera internalize the face of a city?

Thus not only would a dialogue of cities take place but a practical feel for the secret of film-making as well."
                                                                                                                                                                      ---------------------- Audrius Stonys
