Abstract:

'A Quiet Little Entry' (44minutes) is about an 'unknown' woman called Subbalakshmi who livedout her life on the fringes of history on the salt pans of the Cholamandalamcoast. For a brief period in her life she was associated with theChattopadhyayas--Mrinalini, Harindranath, and his wife Kamaladevi, withwhom she was specially close. A quirk of fate in early childhood had given herthe written word which became her window into the wider world whensocial and domestic imperatives cut off her participation in the nationalmovement. Subbalakshmi continued to mark her resistance in small waysand left behind fragments of paper as her archive. The film exploresquestions of how we may think about individual lives and dramatichistorical events, the small personal archive, and women's search forfreedom.
