The Gurgaon Valley School, in association with The Arshinagar Project, presents "Song of You and Me", a workshop targeted at young adults. The workshop is within the frame of The Flame Project, an on-going, primarily youth oriented programme conceived by The Arshinagar Project, which aims to create a transformational inner journey that moves through the terrains of Self, Other, identity and freedom, in the process implicitly promoting notions of tolerance, respect for difference and a culture of peace.

The essential work involves research-by-doing, i.e. working through the body towards attaining a condition of simplicity, organicity, flow. Thus, what we are speaking of is a kind of unmasking – a dropping of our daily-life mask, of the many guards society conditions us to adopt, and a return to a state where there is no need to hide in front of the other person.

Workshop Overview: ‘Song of You and Me’, presented within the frame of The Flame Project (outlined above) is specifically designed for young adults and involves a deep and embodied immersion in mystical poetry, music, authentic movement, breath and voice work, mindful, non-pedantic discourse and reflection.

The core of the work is based on Sufiana Qawwali as practised by the musicians of the Dargah Hzt. Nizamuddin (Qawwal Bacchon ki Gharana) in New Delhi. This form was created by Hzt. Amer Khusrao Dehlavi, a 13th century Sufi poet-saint, and the songs are of a transcendent and transgressive nature, and it is this transgressive nature that is of interest to us, because they take us to a space where the boundaries of the Self dissolve. We will work with the songs, the vigorous clapping, the whirling dance (Raqs) and the chanting (Zikr) practices associated with it, as well as with simple, organic patterns of movement created in response to the music as stimulus.

The Arshinagar Project is envisioned as a collective of artists
and cultural practitioners from different traditional and contemporary
disciplines, as well as practitioners from other disciplines such as
anthropology, education and ecology, for research into performance
as transformational action.

'Arshinagar' means 'the city of mirrors', and the name is derived
from a song by Lalon Phokir, one of the greatest masters among
the Bauls of Bengal - wandering mystical musician-performers who
through embodied practice attempt to touch the unbodied. The logo
represents the 'ektara' (literally 'one-stringed') - a drone-like
instrument used in different forms and names in different Asian
cultures, which has come to symbolize the Bauls.

The Arshinagar Project aims to foster a spirit of freedom, respect for
human diversity, ecological harmony and love, among young adults,
youth in colleges and universities, educators and others, through
performances, immersive workshops in urban and natural settings
based on traditions of mystical performance and practice as well as
contemporary performance-craft, through lecture-demonstrations,
seminars, and journeys through inner and outer spaces.
