INDIAN COUNCIL FOR CULTURAL RELATIONS

INDIAN COUNCIL FOR CULTURAL RELATIONS PRESENTS KATYAYANI’S `O', AMULTI-MEDIA, DANCE THEATRE PRODUCTION, DIRECTED BY SOHAILA KAPUR, CHOREOGRAPHEDBY GILLES CHUYEN AND SHILPIKA BORDOLOI.

O...as asymbol encapsulates multiple meanings. It is Shunya, or the great Nothingness, whichhas no beginning or end. It isalso the Primordial Egg from which all life emerges. It represents the CircleOf Emotions, the Feminine Principle, the evocation of Orgasm, the WaterElement, the Primordial Universe, and the Divine Absolute…
In thiscontext, it is the story of two women, from two different religions, whowent through those infinite possibilities in their lives. They bent the rules in the bargain, suffering social ostracism as aresult. Revered inthe end by the very men who castigated them, these extraordinary saint-poets --Rabia the Sufi from Iraq and Karaikkal Ammayar, the Shaivite from Tamil Nadu, were opposites in nature, but battled similar obstacles to attain theirspiritual goals. In this sense, they were early feminists.

The play has been funded by the Ministry of Culture under its Production Grantscheme.
