What does the concept of Dubai mean to you? Do you consider it part of the
Global North or South? Sun, sand, skyscrapers, sheikhs, and other tabloid
stereotypes? In relation to Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, in relation to its
sister city-states of Doha, Singapore, Las Vegas? As a demographic
blueprint for the city of tomorrow?

WE ARE THINKING about gulf return, desalinated reveries, post-orientalist
romances, compound interests, baudrillardian khawaja complexes, palm
reading, Modhesh on medwakh, postcolonial kinship networks, shopping mall
heteroglossia, shanzai circuits, landcruiser psychogeography, the
Choueifat-industrial, south-south reorientations, the Levantine metal
scene, desert ionisers, batooliciousness, urban acupuncture, the
bluetooth-bbm wars, medispa majlises, solar sintering, the SZR grand prix,
khaleeji futurism, petronostalgia, the sonic radii of mosques,
third-culture petri dishes, sunburn safaris, acid biriani dreams, a world
without water, speculative architecture, spectres from the subcontinent,
the conveyor belt to canada, décapitalisme, #momelaninmoproblems,
kaleidescopic kitsch, and the future weird.

AND YOU?

WE WELCOME submissions around the theme of ‘The Concept of Dubai,’ and
encourage experimentation with form, transmedia, and (web)site-specific
installations; critical texts, interrogative narratives, slow journalism,
sensuous net-artwork, moving or still images, psychogeographic mappings,
place hacking, manifestos and conversations, among others. Because of the
nature of THESTATE, please do not feel restricted by the above; please feel
free to alternatively submit a wall of text.

THE STATE is a print journal and sociohistorical forum based out of Dubai,
U.A.E. It investigates South-South reorientations, problematised futurisms,
transgressive cultural criticism, the space between print and audio-visual
experiences, their transition to mediated online forms, and the sensuous
architecture of this “printernet.”

Please send your pitches or submissions, along with a brief bio, to *
info at thestate.ae*, by *DECEMBER 15th, 2012*. We ask that you submit new
works, but are willing to reprint pieces that have not been published in
English; however, we are unable to translate ourselves. Commissioned pieces
will receive up to US$500. Submissions from women, people of colour, and
lgbt*quia folk especially encouraged.
