As the ‘poetry’ magazine turns 100, Malayalanatu celebrates this occasion
as the 100th anniversary of little magazines as a whole.
Founded in Chicago by Harriet Monroe in 1912, Poetry magazine in its first
year published William Carlos Williams and William Butler Yeats; Joyce
Kilmer’s “Trees” and Ezra Pound’s “In a Station of the Metro”; and
introduced Rabindranath Tagore to the English-speaking world just before he
was awarded the Nobel Prize. The magazine has since published a new issue
every month for one hundred years.
Since its beginning Malayalanatu has concentrated its team work towards
nurturing and promoting the alternative media movement. Malayalanatu , a
global community for malayalees, considers this occasion an opportunity
to identify and mark the routes of alternative media and literature
movements that sprouted in Kerala .
Marking the start of its activities, Malayalanatu Thrissur chapter with
its members from Thrissur, Malappuram and Palakkad districts joining hands
with the department of Malayalam of Sree neelakanta government Sanskrit
college , Pattambi has organized an exhibition , showcasing a wide
collection of little magazines numbering around 5000 that have been
published in Kerala along with talk sessions with prominent journalists.
