NFF against sea reclamation

The State Government’s proposal to reclaim land from the sea for
developing industrial sites has raised opposition from the coastal
residents whose main occupation is fishing.

National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) national secretary T Peter said that
they would launch an agitation if the government went ahead with the
project. “We will not allow reclamation of sea at any cost and will
resist it at any cost,” he said.

Noting that the project was detrimental to the interests of fishermen
dependent on sea for their livelihood, Peter said that the reclamation
of land in one area would lead to sea erosion in nearby areas. It
would also affect the sea currents and result in depletion of marine
wealth, he said.

Peter said that the reclamation would disturb the fragile ecology of
the coast and interfere with the breeding of the fish.

He also urged the government not to utilise the money from the state
exchequer for conducting a feasibility study on this project.
