The Blue Eye of Siberia-English-2X57 Minutes 2 February 2 2013 in the Auditorium
Known as the Blue Eye of Siberia, LakeBaikal is the oldest - and deepest - lake on earth. Home to more than2,500 species of fish and crustacean, the lake holds a fifthof the planet's fresh water. To the indigenous people who live along its shores, Baikal wields enormous spiritualpower. Its cliffs are gods, its creation is the stuffof legends. But the delicate balance of this ancientecosystem has been endangered by overfishing and industrial pollution. In 1988, for example, 700 tonnes of nitrates and 13,000 tonnes of chlorides were discharged into the Selanga river, which feeds the lake. Even if the pollution were stopped now, scientistssay it would take the rivers that feed Lake Baikal up to 400 yearsto restore it to health.
