(Equivalent to 7.5 higher education credits)

April 2 - May 3, 2013.

Two of the five weeks will be conducted in Istanbul, Turkey. Otherwise, the preparation and post-Turkey work and evaluation will take place simultaneously in Gothenburg, Sweden, and Bangalore, India.

This course is a collaboration programme between the Valand Academy and Centre for Film and Drama’s Suchitra School of Cinema and Dramatic Arts, Bangalore with the support of Region Västra Götaland´s Cultural Committee and the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg.

No fees.

Higher Secondary Education or PUC completed
Ability to speak and write English

COURSE THEME: 
The overall theme of the course is tourism/activism in an intercultural context. The basic idea is that you, as a filmmaker, will explore how you and other film-makers portray images of people from other cultures/countries. The learning, by making the films and reflecting on the motives and urges that guided the filmmaking, is in understan-ding the creative process of filming in another culture/country. It looks at different ways of encountering the other. Fundamentally, the course is about how you, as a film student, will challenge your own assumptions, ideas and beliefs. You look into your own perspectives and attitudes, how you meet other people from other cultures, and what and why and how you choose to film.

The course is based on workshops, lectures, group discussions presentations, exercises and group work in the audio-visual field. The course includes independent study of concepts such as tourism and activism as well as studies of prescribed literature.

Kindly note: The course is free, but admitted students must have access to a video camera and computer with software for editing during the course. Selected Indian students may apply to Suchitra CFD for borrowing a camera during the course period.


THE COURSE CONTENT:
The course is based on workshops, lectures, group discussions about given tasks, presentations exercises, individual work and group work in the audio-visual field. The learning is focused on the creative, creative process in a different culture / environment. Group exercises and seminars emphasise intercultural aspects.

The course includes independent studies, exercises and analyzes the concepts of tourism and activism. The course will take place simultaneously in Bangalore and Gothenburg, but two weeks of the course, combining Indian and Swedish students, will be located in Istanbul. Before the trip abroad, the film students will prepare their own audio-visual presentations, read the prescribed literature and write a reflection that is presented to all the other students before departure. After returning home, the students will work independently to do post-production work on their audio-visual materials, and write a reflective essay that will presented to the other students. The course concludes with an account of filmed and written material.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

After completing the course, students should be able to:

- Describe the reflections to portray ‘The Other’
- Describe the practical circumstances of the people portrayed in the audio-visual work
- Independently search, evaluate and critically interpret relevant information to film in another culture and country

Required Skills and abilities

The students should be able to –

- Participate in and contribute to creative team work in an international context
- Describe and critically assess other students' work processes, judgement and approach
- Reflect in writing on their own cinematic approach
- Demonstrate an ability to independently formulate questions that portray people and places

Forms of assessment

There will be practical exercises and written reports that will be examined during the course. The final examination will be by an audio-visual presentation of a prescribed exercise and a written reflection on the course themes about exploring the other.

Rating
Grades: Fail (U), Pass (G).

Course Evaluation
The course ends with a written, anonymous, individual evaluation and the oral group evaluation. This material then serves as a basis for changes in the course structure.

The medium of instruction is English.

Prakash Belawadi is a columnist and writer and director for the stage, television and films. He is the founder of Centre for Film and Drama, now under Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy, Bangalore, which conducts courses in filmmaking and acting and organises screenings, shows and seminars on aspects of media and issues of current interest. His debut feature 'STUMBLE' won the National Award for Best Feature in the English language (2003). He has won other awards for his work on the stage and screen and recently received the Karnataka Nataka Academy award (2012) for his contribution to English and Kannada language theatre.
