*Two minor dalit girls raped in Bhagalpur*

BHAGALPUR: At the time when people across the globe were busy celebrating
diwali, two minor dalit girls (one studying in class eight and other in
class six in a middle school) were raped by two middle aged persons near
Asuraha village under Chandan police station in Banka district. One of the
accused is 45-years old and the other is of nearly 34-years, said sources
adding both the accused persons are close relatives (brother-in-laws).

According to sources, the victims were kidnapped while they were returning
to their village after collecting fire woods on Sunday evening. The victims
were taken away on a two-wheeler to a remote place on seeing them without
any senior member and were raped by the kidnappers, said sources adding the
kidnappers had also threatened the victims of dire consequences if they
informed the police.

Confirming the incident, the Banka SP Pushkar Anand said that the victims
in their statements said that they were kidnapped by Manjul Ansari
(resident of Karmatand village) and Inamul Ansari (resident of Asuraha
village). The victims, in their statements before police, narrated that
they were raped by the duo and were abandoned at isolated spot, said the SP
adding the victims were recovered by police on being informed by local
people on Monday.

Statements of the victims have also been recorded in the court under
section 164 of CrPC, said the SP adding the victims have been sent for
medical examination besides for pathological tests. FIR against the accused
persons has been lodged and Manjul Ansari (one of the accused) has been
arrested and police is looking for the other accused, the SP added saying
police have taken the matter very seriously and will see that justice is
done to the victims.

Tribal woman gang-raped

A married tribal woman was allegedly gang-raped by five persons on last
Sunday, but she reported the matter to police after one week of the
incident. The incident took place in a remote forest village on the
outskirts of Donkarai village on the borders of East Godavari and
Visakhapatnam districts.

According to Rampachodavaram DSP Chaitanya Kumar, the 21-year-old woman was
sent for medical tests to Rajahmundry government hospital by police after
registering a case against the five accused under Section 376 D Criminal
Amendment Act 2013, Section 341, 506 read with 149, Section 3 (2) (v) of
SC, ST Act. The accused include one Sheik Kishore (25), Pangi Raju (23) and
three others. The accused have been taken into custody.

The DSP said that last Sunday (Oct.27), the woman left for her mother’s
house from Donkarai, which is about 4 km by walk to get firewood. On the
way, she was waylaid by Kishore and Raju who took her to nearby bushes
where three others were present. All the five gang-raped her after
threatening her, the DSP said. “It is practically difficult to reach the
spot where the rape had taken place and the entire terrain is not
accessible. We are trying to elicit more information about the accused ,”
he said.

Attacked by caste Hindus, Dalits knock collector's door

Dalit villagers, who were allegedly attacked by caste Hindus on Deepavali
day at Anthanallur in Srirangam constituency, approached Collector
Jayashree Muraleedharan on Monday seeking to initiate action against their
tormentors. They appealed her to shift a PDS outlet claiming that it is
located at a place dominated by members of the other community.

A large number of Dalits, including those injured in the alleged attack,
thronged the collectorate.

Explaining the chain of events, they told the collector that a section of
people from their community were waiting at a bus stop at  Mullikarumbur on
Deepavali day when a group of caste Hindus approached them and picked up a
quarrel. Mullikarumbur is a place dominated by caste Hindus.

According to the Dalits, the caste Hindus used filthy language and
addressed them by their caste name. When asked why they were targeting
them, the group allegedly assaulted them.  “They came there with an
intention to attack us and as planned, they rushed towards us with lethal
weapons and iron rods and assaulted us,”  a victim said.

The injured Dalits were rushed to the GH and were given treatment.
Meanwhile, Dalit members lodged a complaint with the Somarasampettai police
station, but the police allegedly refused to entertain the complaint.

Meanwhile, when the caste Hindus learnt that a complaint has been lodged
against them, they stopped the Dalits once again while they were waiting at
the bus stop and warned them of dire consequences.

In the petition to the collector, they also expressed fear that the
situation may worsen if the people from their colony go to the ration
outlet located in anarea dominated by caste Hindus. “People from our area,
especially women, fear to go there to buy things and we appeal to open a
PDS outlet so that we may live peacefully”, the petition further said.

The Collector received the petition and asked police officials to look into
the issue.

Dalit colony ransacked, 13 persons held

Tension gripped Rendadi village near Sholinghur after a group of around 30
Caste Hindus ransacked a Dalit colony in the village and torched a thatched
house on Monday night.

According to sources, it all started with a wordy duel between one
Arumugam, a resident of the Dalit colony and Venkatesan of Rendadi village,
and owner of a brick kiln. The former had been purchasing bricks from the
latter for the last six to seven months for the purpose of building
construction.

A week ago, Arumugam had gone to Venkatesan’s brick kiln and asked him to
reduce the price of the bricks which he had bought, as most of them were
reportedly not of good quality. This led to a heated argument between
Arumugam  and Venkatesan. Irked over this, along with a few of his friends,
had gone to Arumugam’s house and assaulted him.

Following a complaint from Arumugam, the Sholinghur police officials
registered a case against Venkatesan and his associates under the SC/ST
(Prevention of Atrocities) Act and various Sections of IPC.

The police also arrested five of them, while others obtained anticipatory
bail.

Agitated over the arrest of their community people, a group of 30 Caste
Hindus from Eriminnur, Rendadi and Mannarsamy villages, allegedly entered
the colony around 9.30 pm on Monday and ransacked the houses there.

The group also then set fire to a thatched house and dry grass bundles,
besides damaging four more houses in the colony. They also damaged four
two-wheelers, police said.

On information, a police team from Sholinghur and Arakkonam rushed to the
village and brought the situation under control.

The police arrested 13 persons from the Vanniyar community in connection
with the incident and have launched a search for 10 others.

“We have deployed 50 police personnel in and around the village and the
colony to avert any untoward incident,” said Deputy Superintendent of
Police of Arakkonam S Seetharaman.

Superintendent of Police P Vijaya Kumar also conducted an inquiry at  the
village and the colony on Tuesday.

The police have brought the village under tight security to prevent any
untoward incident further.

Assault cases keep Madurai police on their toes

Just as Madurai city and rural district police heaved a sigh of relief
after the Muthuramalinga Thevar guru puja passed off peacefully, both the
police units had a tough time with assault cases reported during Deepavali.

While most of the offences had snowballed over drunken brawls, others were
attributed to petty issues that turned into major crimes, police said. The
Festival of Lights dawned for the city police with the murder of a youth,
S. Mathan Kumar, at Karimedu.

The electrician was stabbed to death by one G. Sasikumar. The deceased,
along with his younger brother, Gautham, had gone to Sasikumar’s house to
question him why he had assaulted Mathan Kumar the previous day. Mathan
Kumar, who was stabbed on his thigh, died on the way to hospital. Besides
the murder, three assault cases were reported on November 1.

The next day, two deaths were reported following an accident involving two
motorcycles. Kannan and Palani Vinodkumar were riding a two-wheeler when
another speeding motorcycle dashed against their bike on Tirupparankundram
Road. In a rash and negligent manner, Dilipan (23) had been riding on the
extreme right side of the road and collided with the other motorcycle
head-on. The pillion riders of both the motorcycles sustained serious
injuries. A ‘108’ ambulance that passed the accident spot was stoned by the
friends of Dilipan, the police said.

Four more assault cases were reported at Sellur, Teppakulam, Anna Nagar and
Pudur on Saturday and Sunday.

Over a dozen assault cases were reported in various police stations in the
rural district in the weekend.

The police said that many of the attacks were caused by the drunk, and for
frivolous reasons.

At Avaniapuram, a man, who admonished a teenage boy for having peeped into
the bathroom while his minor daughter was taking bath, was clubbed. The
police have registered a case against three persons, including the boy’s
mother.

A Dalit youth sustained bleeding injuries when he was attacked by two caste
Hindus who were enraged when the former tried to take bath where they were
bathing in the Vaigai river on Sunday.

Objection to rash riding led to two youth being assaulted in separate
incidents at Sedapatti and Tirumangalam Taluk police station limits. The
perpetrators had used club, belt and liquor bottle to assault the victims,
the police said.

In Elumalai police station limits, two groups clashed at E. Kottaipatti
with clubs after one group of people damaged a public building under the
influence of alcohol on Saturday. In a similar incident at Kadupatti, a
man, who questioned a group of drunks for shouting near his house, was
beaten up.

In another incident reported in Avaniapuram, a man was assaulted by two
youths when he tried to pacify them after they picked a quarrel with his
neighbour. In a similar incident, a man was assaulted by his neighbours
when he objected to bursting of crackers near his house at Muthamil Nagar
in Melur. A youth who refused to part with cigarettes was assaulted with a
pocket knife by a three-member gang at Peraiyur.

Police officials rued these petty quarrels that led to several people
suffering bleeding injuries and kept the police on their toes during the
festival.

Dalits arrested

Around 50 members of Dalit Viduthalai Katchi were arrested when they tried
to lay siege to the Collectorate here on Monday.

They wanted speedy police action on various cases of atrocities against the
Dalits in the district in the recent days.
