Dear friends,

As part of its huge, planned expansion of hundreds of thousands of
megawatts of coal-based electrical power, the government of India is
building or proposing a number of large coal-fired projects along the
coastline in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. These include ultra-mega power
projects (UMPPs) such as the 4,000 MW coal plant at Cheyyur, 60 kms south
of Chennai, and others in close proximity. These projects will corrode a
rich ecosystem filled with estuaries, lakes, tanks, the ocean, old sand
dunes, mangroves, marine and inland water species, forest, old fishing
villages, coastal agriculture ... Such a concentration of dirty coal-based
power in this rich coastal ecosystem will have a number of hazardous
effects, near and far-reaching, short and long-term, on the lives,
livelihoods and health of people several kilometres around, and on other
species.



These planned projects also throw up a series of wider questions – about
energy policy, energy transitions, equity and climate change. In order to
discuss the implications of Cheyyur and other projects, and to debate these
wider questions, we in *India Climate Justice* are organizing a public
meeting this Friday, 27 September. *Nityanand Jayaraman*, Advisor,
Community Environmental Monitoring, will speak about Cheyyur and other
large coal projects along the coast, their impacts on livelihoods, people's
health, and the ecosystem, land use changes and the implications of these
projects for future climate change. His talk will be followed by an open
discussion, in which we will also touch upon what support and solidarity is
possible in Delhi to strengthen the resistance to these projects. Please
