Call for papers

Title: Contemporary Bollywood Directors

Contemporary Bollywood Directors is an edited volume mapping the
films and works of selected contemporary filmmakers from popular Hindi
cinema , or Bollywood.

We invite scholarly papers that will focus on major works, style and
themes of those Bollywood filmmakers who have attained critical and
commercial success during the past two decades, and while attempting
to make films within the commercial framework, have interrogated the
grammar and redefined the cinematic aesthetics. The filmmakers chosen
are those who have a sustained body of work s. Articles should not
just summarize their works but will provide a critical analysis of
their works, while grounded in cinematic and popular cultural
theories. Papers should aim at giving an insightful understanding of
how Bollywood cinema mirrors contemporary society, attitudes and
beliefs. Attention will also be paid to how various filmmakers treat
subjects such as gender issues, urban culture and social
discrepancies. The angle should be how influential these directors and
their works are in shaping our cinema.

Articles should be original , not published anywhere before, and
between 3000 and 5000 words. They should be rooted into an
understanding of film histories, film cultures and theories. All
articles will go through the peer-review process.

Aims and objectives:

In the past few years, Hindi cinema has become a major field of
enquiry for researchers and teachers across the globe. The aim of this
book is to provide the readers with an in-depth analysis of major
filmmakers currently working in Bollywood. The volume posits the
following questions:

To what extent can selected filmmakers from Bollywood be termed as
“auteurs”? (At the same time writers should critique the auteur
theory)
What recurring themes, motifs and styles resonate through the works of
 these directors?
How far are the works of these directors informed by the forces of
liberalization and globalization?
What aspects of spectatorship and reception can be observed in these
films, against the backdrop of economic liberalization?
