Thresholds

Dear Artist/Lunatic/Lover/Voyager

This is a time of in-betweens - the death of old habits and the birth of
new desires, when once-upon-a-time destinations become rooms in the house
of memory, while a further island looms into view, still shrouded in mist,
beckoning us to row on.

We haven't reached out to you in a long, long time, so first let us look
back - in August we held our third anniversary festival, Roads and Seas, in
various hidden corners of Kolkata, and party in the red-soiled land of
Tepantar Theatre Village. We had the iconic Moushumi Bhowmik, Atelier
Theatre from Delhi, Anish Victor from Bangalore and Butoh dancer Syv
Bruzeau from Singapore. Here are some images from Syv's performance, "They
Never Cease", at Studio 21, Kolkata: http://wp.me/p2sKej-2e

We will end the year at the Ekaharya Festival

in Cochin, where Arka Mukhopadhyay will present his solo performance, "If
It Be Now - Fragments and Impressions of Hamlet".

And now, looking forward:

2015 begins with "Oneness", an intensive residential Butoh workshop with
Japanese master-teacher Rhizome Lee
<http://thearshinagarproject.us3.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=39aafe1e05f1872977a9b7e19&id=1641e6d4dc&e=96b2d5964e>,
in the magical Tepantar Theatre Village in rural Bengal, from January 5th
to 9th. The workshop will also feature sessions on voice with Uttam Dasbaul
<http://thearshinagarproject.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=39aafe1e05f1872977a9b7e19&id=cb542416df&e=96b2d5964e>
and on Kalaripayattu, breath and expression with Arka Mukhopadhyay

Presented as part of the "India Rhizoming Tour" 2014-15, the central theme
of the workshop is

 ‘We are ONENESS as Life’.

Areas of exploration will include:

1. Transcendence from existential mode to subbody, i.e . Subconscious body
mode by original conditioning method (Breathing, Vibrating, Swaying,
Opening various channels of the body and so on.)

2. Listen to the darkness of the body, catch and follow the subtle
tendencies of Life in it.

3. Research in the Abyss & the necessity of creation for each Life and
share it together as own issue.

And finally, the call for applications for the Ghosts of Shakespeare
Festival - 2015 is now out:

Ghosts of Shakespeare is an annual festival that is meant to confront the
world of Shakespeare from the vantage of contemporary subjectivities and
lived experience, as well as spaces that can be called primordial or
mythical. It is meant to exist, both physically and metaphorically, in
marginal spaces.

For the 2015 edition, sub-titled “The Idiot’s Tale”, we will look at solo
performances. Through this device, we are essentially looking at the figure
of the solitary human being in front of the universe.

Though that's all the information for now, we'd like to share some thoughts
before we sign off - day by day, we as a species are wading deeper and
deeper in blood. From the seaside in Gaza to schools in Pakistan, we have
watered the tree of hate with the blood of children. 'After such knowledge,
what deliverance?', the poet would ask. And another poet would answer, that
in dark times, we must sing about the dark times. Let us sing on then. Let
us sing songs of memory, and lullabies to our unborn children. In whatever
way, and in whatever form, let us dance our deaths, and let us sing our
fragile lives. We leave you with the words of the iconic Bengali poet
Jibanananda Das, whose 60th death anniversary passed by recently:

*"I still say, As long as we are alive on this earth, Let us walk from sun
to sun. Let us touch the grass of this world, Let us wonder how, From
creation's poisoned heart And the trampled soul of humanity Yet is born the
infinite blue sky. Let us wonder, let us wonder!"*

With love,
