The Indian green movement: an ‘environmentalism of the poor’ or a
self-indulgent exercise in middle class privilege? Do green technologies
really empower the poor or is this an urban activist’s fantasy? Do Indian
farmers give a damn about sustainable rural livelihoods or do they aspire,
rather, for the same middle class comforts that green activists themselves
enjoy?

To engage with these provocative questions, you're invited to "चाय with
चाचा: An Outsider’s View of Green Movements in India" at Paradigm Shift
where Trent Brown* will engage be drawing particularly on his doctoral
research on organic farming movements in India, he will play with the idea
of the ‘outsider,’ considering the efficacy of urban ‘outsiders’ in
facilitating sustainable rural development.

His central argument is that, irrespective of the technical merits of
ecologically integrated agriculture, urban activists and NGO workers are
significantly constrained in their ability to successfully promote the
sustainable development, due to the the social and institutional
environment they inhabit.

Dr Trent Brown* teaches in sociology and Asian studies at the University of
Wollongong, Australia. His doctoral thesis focused on sustainable
agriculture organisations in India. He has since worked on a research
project on the impacts of globalisation in India’s regional towns and has a
wider interest in agrarian change and rural-urban relations. In the past,
he has been an activist in a number of environmental and social justice
campaigns in his hometown of Wollongong, Australia.
