"Bangalore is a city of gardens" is an over-beaten statement used by all
sorts of urbanists all the time. The statement more than anything
represents nostalgia of past. Those who repeat that phrase again and again
don't inform us - what was there in those gardens? Were there any living
eco-systems, any spots rich in biodiversity, any endemic species to the
city or the region?

Let us rephrase those questions of past in present.

Are there any living eco-systems in the city? Any spots rich in
biodiversity? Any endemic species still alive in the city? Do local
governments have a role to play in conservation of those species? What role
citizens play can play for conserving or regenerating the eco-systems in
Bengaluru.

Now that we have started articulating our questions, who will answer those
questions?

Dr. H S Sudhira, Director of Gubbi Labs!

Sudhira has a PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His
research interest centres on how towns and cities evolve. His research has
been primarily on land-use and land cover change studies exploring their
consequences on environmental sustainability and understanding their
inter-relationships with resources and transportation. His broader research
addresses the evolution and growth of towns and cities invoking complexity
sciences, understanding planning practices and studying the effect of
governance. He was a faculty member at the Indian Institute for Human
Settlements. Earlier, he had a stint with the Directorate of Urban Land
Transport, Govt. of Karnataka as Land-use and Transportation Specialist. He
is a bird-watcher and volunteers for India Literacy Project (ILP).

He will be here with us at Paradigm Shift, you're invited to join us for a
lively talk: Climate सत्संग: Biodiversity in Bengaluru.
