*Giri* *Deshingkar* *Memorial Lectures *are instituted in the memory of
Professor Giri Deshingkar, former Director of the CSDS and founder member
of the Institute of Chinese Studies. Earlier speakers in the series
includeProfessors Prasenjit Duara, Wang Gungwu, Tan Chung, Hamashita
Takeshi, Ashwani
Saith, Richard Appelbaum and Elizabeth Perry.



*Wang Hui* is a leading intellectual of contemporary China who has actively
intervened in major debates of historical, cultural and ideological issues.
He is Professor in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, Tsinghua
University <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsinghua_University>,
Beijing<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beijing>.




His researches focus on contemporary Chinese
literature<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_literature#Modern>
 and intellectual history. He was the executive editor (with Huang
Ping<http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Huang_Ping&action=edit&redlink=1>)
of the influential magazine *Dushu <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dushu> *(读书
, *Reading*) from May 1996 to July 2007. The US magazine *Foreign
Policy*<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_Policy>
 named him as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world in May
2008.



*Patricia Uberoi* was formerly Professor of Sociology at the Institute of
Economic Growth. She is currently Honorary Fellow and Vice Chairperson of
the Institute of Chinese Studies.
