In the 13th edition of FD Zone Delhi we bring to you films by two visual artists/ painters, Tyeb Mehta and Saba Hasan. Tyeb Mehta's critically acclaimed film 'Koodal' ('meeting point' in Tamil) made in 1970 explores the city of Mumbai through the eyes of the painter- a congregation of disjointed images and events that intermingle and interact with each other to construct the complex rhythms of everyday life in the metropolis. The film won the Filmfare Critics Award in 1970. 

Saba Hasan's 'The Truth Project/ Haqeeqat' (2013) interrogates the conceptual, historical, political and philosophical idea of truth through a series of conversations with practitioners across a diverse area of work. What is truth? Do we want to (or is it even possible to) uncover it? Is what we perceive as truth the only truth or is it a lie under different circumstances or from another point of view? Who is to determine what is true or false? The work is an attempt to open out some of these questions.

Saba Hasan will be present for discussion after the screening.

About the artists

Tyeb Mehta (25 July 1925 – 2 July 2009) was a noted Indian painter. He was part of the noted Bombay Progressive Artists' Group, which included greats like F.N. Souza, S.H. Raza and M.F. Husain, and the first post-colonial generation of artists in India, like John Wilkins who also broke free from the nationalist Bengal school and embraced Modernism instead, with its Post-Impressionist colors, Cubist forms and brusque, Expressionistic styles. He received several awards during his career including the Padma Bhushan by Govt. of India in 2007. 

Saba Hasan is an abstract artist and she has successfully developed works across media like painting, photography, book installations, video and sound. Her art evokes the forces of time, nature and personal histories in a potent nuanced voice.She has been awarded the National Raza Award for painting 2005 and international fellowships in art and culture from Syracuse University, USA, Ecole D’Arts Visuels, Lausanne, the French Cultural Ministry, Paris, the George Keyt Art Foundation, Colombo, The Florence Biennale and the Oscar Kokoschka Academy in Austria. The Imago Mundi foundation displayed her work as part of Luciano Benetton's collection at the Venice Biennale 2013. Saba's concept video 'La Verite/Haqeeqat/the Truth Project' has been nominated for the Celeste Art Prize 2014 and will be at the Assab One show in Milan 15-23 November.
