The writers’s forum and other organisations came in support of the ‘
Bahujan- Shraman’ issue of Forward Press and condemned the police action
against it. Janwadi Lekhak Sangh issued a press release today (written
below) while forum for  freedom of expression marked a protest March in
Bhagalpur Bihar. The Convenor of forum, Om Sudha  asked the Home Ministry
to immediate withdraw the FIR , lodged against ‘ Forward Press.’

Meanwhile a group of right wing students sent one another application to
the ‘ Vasant Kunj Police Station,’ for taking action against the  artist of
the illustration, which was made on its own interpretation of ‘ Durga Myth.
The applicants ask the police to take action against a writer of the
‘Forward Press’, too.

RELEASE*



The raid by Special Branch of the Delhi police at the Nehru Place office of
monthly *FORWARD* Press on October 9, in which four of its staffers were
arrested and the confiscation of the copies of the latest issue of the
magazine from bookstalls on October 10 are matters of deep concern and
deserve outright condemnation. The police took these actions without order
of any court or competent authority. It is said that the action was taken
on the basis of a complaint registered at the Vasant Kunj police station.

The latest issue of the magazine is focussed on Bahujan-Shraman tradition.
The issue carries articles that interpret the Puranic story of the killing
of Mahishasur by Durga as a struggle between the Aryans and the non-Aryans.
This may have angered the Hindutvadis, who have been routinely indulging in
vandalism in the name of hurting religious sentiments. On the evening of
October 9, activists of RSS' students' wing ABVP tried to block the
organising of 'Mahishasur Martyrdom Day' function at JNU. The Delhi police
action and the ABVP vandalism are closely interlinked and manifest the
growing assertiveness of the reactionary, communal-fascist forces since the
Modi government coming to power and the aid being extended to them by the
government machinery.

The Janwadi Lekhak Sangh strongly condemns the action against the magazine
without any proper court order and views it as a violation of the
fundamental right of freedom of expression. We also condemn the violence
indulged in by the ABVP activists during the observance of 'Mahishasur
Martyrdom Day' at JNU. Action should, in fact, be taken against those who
do not believe in expression of dissent while sticking to democratic norms.
VHP leader Praveen Togadia's recent statement that history books written by
Romila Thapar and Bipin Chandra should be burnt is an example of such
tendencies.

Janwadi Lekhak Sangh appeals to all democratic and secular forces to unite
against such tendencies. We demand that action should be taken against
police officials who ordered and conducted the illegal raid on *FORWARD *Press.
We also demand action against the RSS activists who indulged in violence
and unruly behaviour at JNU

जनवादी लेखक संघ ने आज अपने प्रेस नोट में ( नीचे उद्धृत ) फारवर्ड प्रेस के
बहुजन –श्रमण अंक का समर्थन करते हुए फॉरवर्ड प्रेस के खिलाफ पुलिस दमन की
निंदा की है वहीं बिहार के भागलपुर में फोरम फॉर फ्रीडम ऑफ़ एक्सप्रेशन ने
प्रतिरोध मार्च निकाला . फोरम के संयोजक ओम सुधा ने कहा कि ‘गृह मंत्रालय को
तत्काल प्रभाव से फॉरवर्ड प्रेस के खिलाफ ऍफ़ आई आर वापस लेनी चाहिए.’

इस बीच दक्षिणपंथी छात्रों के समूह ने वसंतकुंज थाने में एक और शिकायत भेजकर
चित्रकार लाल रत्नाकर,जिन्होंने ‘दुर्गा मिथ’ के नए पाठ के साथ चित्र कथा
प्रस्तुत की है तथा फॉरवर्ड प्रेस के एक लेखक के खिलाफ कारवाई की मांग की है .

*फॉरवर्ड प्रेस* पत्रिका के नेहरु प्लेस स्थित दफ़्तर पर दिल्ली पुलिस की विशेष
शाखा द्वारा 9 अक्टूबर को छापा मार कर चार कर्मचारियों की गिरफ़्तारी और अगले
दिन, 10 अक्टूबर को विभिन्न विक्रेताओं के यहाँ से उक्त पत्रिका की प्रतियों
की ज़ब्ती बेहद चिंताजनक और निंदनीय घटनाक्रम है. पुलिस के पास अपनी इस
कार्रवाई के लिए कोई अदालती आदेश या सक्षम प्राधिकारी का आदेश नहीं था. बताया
जाता है कि यह कार्रवाई वसंत कुञ्ज पुलिस थाने में दर्ज की गयी एक शिकायत के
आधार पर की गयी है. पत्रिका का यह अंक बहुजन-श्रमण परम्परा पर केन्द्रित है.
दुर्गा के हाथों असुर जाति के राजा महिषासुर के वध की पौराणिक कथा को
आर्य-अनार्य संघर्ष की एक कड़ी के रूप में चिन्हित करते हुए इसे महिष की शहादत
के तौर पर व्याख्यायित करने वाले लेख इस अंक में हैं. यह हिन्दुत्ववादियों की
नाराजगी का सबब हो सकता है, जिन्होंने पहले भी ऐसे मुद्दों पर आस्था को आहत
करने का नुक्ता उठा कर हंगामे किये हैं. 9 अक्टूबर की शाम को जे एन यू में
महिषासुर शहादत दिवस मनाये जाने के मौक़े पर भी आर एस एस के छात्र मोर्चे, अखिल
भारतीय विद्यार्थी परिषद् ने उत्पात मचाया. दिल्ली पुलिस की कार्रवाई और ए बी
वी पी का उत्पात, दोनों एक ही श्रृंखला की कड़ियाँ हैं. हम इसे केंद्र में
भाजपा के आने के बाद प्रतिक्रियावादी, साम्प्रदायिक-फ़ासीवादी ताक़तों के बुलंद
होते हौसले और पुलिस-प्रशासन के स्तर पर उन्हें उपलब्ध कराई जा रही सहूलियतों
के ख़तरनाक उदाहरण के रूप में देखते हैं.


जनवादी लेखक संघ उक्त पत्रिका पर बिना अदालती आदेश के की गयी इस कार्रवाई और
अभिव्यक्ति की आज़ादी के साथ ऐसे असंवैधानिक खिलवाड़ की कठोर शब्दों में
भर्त्सना करता है. जनेवि में महिषासुर शहादत दिवस के मौके पर अखिल भारतीय
विद्यार्थी परिषद् के उत्पात की भी हम निंदा करते हैं. कार्रवाई, दरअसल, उन
उपद्रवियों के ख़िलाफ़ होनी चाहिए जो असहमतियों को लोकतांत्रिक मर्यादा के भीतर
रह कर व्यक्त करना नहीं जानते. असहमतियों की अभिव्यक्ति के इन लोकतंत्र-विरोधी
तौर-तरीक़ों को भाजपा के शासन में जिस तरह खुली छूट मिल रही है, वह चिंताजनक
है. भाजपा नेता सुब्रमन्यम स्वामी का तीन दिन पहले दिया गया यह बयान कि बिपन
चन्द्र और रोमिला थापर जैसे इतिहासकारों की किताबें जला देनी चाहिए, ऐसे ही
तौर-तरीक़ों का एक नमूना है.


जनवादी लेखक संघ इस प्रवृत्ति के भर्त्सना करते हुए सभी धर्मनिरपेक्ष और
जम्हूरियतपसंद लोगों से इसके ख़िलाफ़ एकजुट होने की अपील करता है. हम सरकार से
यह मांग करते हैं कि फॉरवर्ड प्रेस की अभिव्यक्ति की आज़ादी सुनिश्चित करे, उस
पर हुए ग़ैरकानूनी पुलिसिया हमले की सख्ती से जांच हो, उसे अंजाम देने वाले
अधिकारियों पर कार्रवाई की जाए और जनेवि में महिषासुर शहादत दिवस के मौक़े पर
तोड़-फोड़ करनेवाले तत्वों के ख़िलाफ़ भी क़ानूनी कार्रवाई की जाए.
