In the March 2015 edition of FD Zone Delhi screenings, we bring you a film
from the archives of Films Division that commemorates an event that began
44 yeas ago. Directed by S.Sukhdev, ‘Nine Months to Freedom’ is the
chronicle of a war that began in March 1971 and ended in December 1971, and
led to the formation of Bangladesh.

NINE MONTHS TO FREEDOM (1972)

It was a few months into the war that would eventually lead to the
liberation of Bangladesh, when a filmmaker began to film the exodus of
refugees from what was then East Pakistan into Calcutta. Initially, all S.
Sukhdev wanted to do was make a film on the meaninglessness of war. As he
kept shooting, it turned into a chronicle of Bangladesh’s fight for
freedom. The film was one of the first independent documentaries in the
country to have been given theatrical releases – and ran for 12 weeks in
Bombay.

ABOUT SUKHDEV

S.Sukhdev made more than 60 films, primarily in the 60s and 70s, which won
over 35 national and international awards. These include the widely feted
‘An Indian Day’, which won a nomination for the Golden Bear at the Berlin
International Film Festival in 1968. His untimely death in 1979 cut short
the career of one of India’s most significant documentary filmmakers.
