चाय with चाचा: A talk on Gender Freedom

While one face of the developing and “rapidly” progressing Indian society
shows us women matching steps with men in every arena, from academics and
research to sports and entertainment, there still remains a large disparity
between various genders, deep rooted in every region and culture of this
country.

Little differences in the way daughters and sons are brought up in a family
lead to social bias in gender roles. While daughters are taught to cover
and behave themselves for their own safety, sons urinate in public are
overlooked and they are allowed to leer at and misbehave with women. The
advise to boys is usually to stay unprovoked by a girl's clothing and
behaviour. When it comes to trans-genders, the idea of freedom seems
blanketed by another thick coat of hypocrisy.

Moreover, the social constructs that burden a gender with expectations to
behave in a certain way, leave us with limited acceptance for anyone who
deviates from the defined gender roles.

With these thoughts and reflections Rakesh Kumar Singh began a cycle ride
to cover the length and breadth of India and "Ride for Gender Freedom" was
evolved.

What is gender freedom?

The idea of gender freedom is simply about peaceful coexistence and
acceptance of all genders- male, female, trans or any other way an
individual wishes to define their gender.

Rakesh Kumar Singh has reached Bangalore. And we at Paradigm Shift are
excited and proud to host him for an informal conversation where he will be
sharing his experiences, views and lessons learned during the ride.

Date: 11th January, 2015

Time: 11:30 AM

Venue: Paradigm Shift, 3-4th Floor, 8, Above GKB Opticals, 80 Feet Road,
Koramangala 4th Block, Near Koramangala Sony Signal, Bengaluru.

About Rakesh Kumar Singh: Rakesh Kumar Singh, a native of Bihar, quit his
corporate job to actively join the movement to end crimes against women. As
a devoted campaigner with Stop Acid Attacks, he realized the extent to
which patriarchy is so seeped in; and how it harms innocent young girls and
scars them for life.

Since March (2014), Rakesh Singh has already visited over 80 villages,
covered around 2,000 kms, interacted with more than 25,000 people and hopes
to reach Delhi by March 2017.
