Excerpts from the novel: "...They could never forget the night that
followed. That was the night everything came together blissfully. That was
the night they slept well, confident that the seed they'd planted would
definitely grow. She also thought of it as her penance for wounding his
heart with her words earlier that day. His body and mind expressed his
conviction that nothing could sufficiently express his gratitude for this
woman who had risked her life doing something all women feared to do. The
night was filled to the brim with giving and receiving. In the middle of
the farm, on the coir rope cot, she lay like a garland on his chest. They
both felt they needed nothing; nothing could make him happier to than to
die at such moment.
She was confident that she wouldn't bleed that month, that there would be
finally be an end to all the talk..."

Brief of the novel: All of Kali and Ponna’s efforts to conceive a
child—from prayers to penance, potions to pilgrimages—have been in vain.
Despite being in a loving and sexually satisfying relationship, they are
relentlessly hounded by the taunts and insinuations of the people around
them. Ultimately, all their hopes and apprehensions come to converge on the
chariot festival in the temple of the half-female god Ardhanareeswara and
the revelry surrounding it. Everything hinges on the one night when rules
are relaxed and consensual union between any man and woman is sanctioned.
This night could end the couple’s suffering and humiliation. But it will
also put their marriage to the ultimate test. Acutely observed, One Part
Woman lays bare with unsparing clarity a relationship caught between the
dictates of social convention and the tug of personal anxieties, vividly
conjuring an intimate and unsettling portrait of marriage, love and sex.
