The whole concept of surrogacy as a substitute for family making being
largely popular in Bangalore with hoardings of IVF clinics promising baby
for infertile and making Bangalore just another destination for "outsourced
pregnancy" after outsourcing IT jobs. Surrogacy is surrounded with the
euphemism of womb renting, baby factory, baby makers among others.Many
foreigners as well as nationals are visiting Bangalore to hire the services
of surrogate at a concessional price considering the dollar exchange rates.
But the real accounts of these women who become surrogate mothers who
undergo gestation and deliver the surrogate child remains hidden, It is
both illuminating and factually telling to delve into the real perspectives
and situation of surrogate mothers, their lives and their backgrounds,
their testimonials and also the plight of surrogate children who are born
but are mired in legal hassles and remain stuck with legal documentation
issues as birth registration , visa permit etc.

To delve deeper in the issues and questions around surrogacy, the scale of
its operations in Bangalore and to listen to the real accounts of surrogate
mothers- we at Paradigm Shift are having a public talk themed 'Rising Hub
of Surrogate Motherhood in Bangalore' by Sonali Kusum who is doing her
doctoral research on surrogacy and is enrolled in National Law School
University of India. She is a lawyer by profession and in past has taught
in Tata Institute of Social Sciences as Assistant Professor.
