The Arshinagar Project in association the Tree of Life presents two
workshops on Kalaripayattu-Voice-Movement in Bangalore between November
26th and 30th.

Among the oldest martial art forms of the world, Kalaripayattu from the
Indian state of Kerala is a complete system of body-mind-spirit practice
based on ancient knowledge of the physical and spiritual aspects of the
human being. It gives the practitioner a heightened sense of
self-awareness, centering, grounding and stillness, leading to an awakening
of the inner creative potential.

Of the two main styles of the form, northern and southern, the latter is
based on a number of organic movement patterns comprising stretches, lunges
and twists that orient the body towards the four cardinal directions, while
enhancing breath focus, balance, skeletal alignment, flexibility and
strength.

The workshop will cover the basic sequences of the southern style of
Kalaripayattu, and each session will also culminate in guided as well as
free-form improvisation with body and voice.

In this workshop, we will combine the movement sequences of Kalari with
breathwork, deep voicing, and organic movement to create a sense of
holistic, joyful self-awareness.

About the facilitator:

Arka Mukopadhyay is a physical performer, teacher and independent
researcher, whose work draws upon various performing, martial and spiritual
forms of practice. He is the founder of the Kolkata based collective, The
Arshinagar Project <https://www.facebook.com/thearshinagarproject/>, and
his performances, workshops and talks have taken him all across India and
abroad. He has trained in Kalari with Ranjan Mullaratt, Murugan Pillai and
Ajith Kumar.
