In the 33rd edition of FD Zone, Delhi, we bring you a Chinese documentary, *THE
UNFINISHED HISTORY OF LIFE* (Part I) directed by Cong Feng. The film is an
intimate portrait of provincial Chinese life as observed by the filmmaker
in Huangyangchuan township, Gansu Province in northwest China.

*Synopsis*
In the film, *The Unfinished History of Life* Cong Feng returns to the
location of his award winning film made in 2008, *Doctor Ma’s Country
Clinic, *to tell the story of all those people with whom he spent many
years of his life. The film revolves around the lives of the filmmaker’s
local friends in Huangyangchuan township, Gansu Province, northwest China.
Most of them are local high school teachers, or ex-teachers, who later got
their jobs transferred to the county. The filmmaker patiently observes the
daily rhythm of life, everyday, mundane moments of people around him to
create a quiet though evocative portrait of village life in China.



*About the filmmaker*

In another life, Cong Feng worked for the weather bureau. He now works as
an independent filmmaker and poet based in Beijing. He is the director of
the *Italy of Gansu Trilogy*, which includes the films
*Religion*(2006), *Doctor
Ma's Country Clinic* (2008), and *The Unfinished History of Life* – *Parts
I and II *(2011). His most recent work, *Stratum 1: The Visitors *(2013),
won the top prize at the 2013 Beijing Independent Film Festival. His works
have appeared at the Berlin International Film Festival, Yamagata
International Documentary Film Festival, International Film Festival
Rotterdam, and across the independent film festival circuit in China. He is
also an editor of the online magazine *Film Auteur* (*Dianyingzuozhe*),
which publishes critical writings by independent filmmakers in China.
