Social theories that focus on domination and resistance have become
hegemonic in the contemporary social sciences, both in the West (through
combinations of Frankfurt School, Bourdieu and Foucault) and in the East
(through articulations of Gramsci and Foucault). The talk will explore and
foreground the possibility of reconstruction of violence at the personal,
institutional and systemic levels of society. Based on a theoretical
articulation of critical realism, hermeneutics and the anthropology of the
gift, it will outline how ethics, culture and practices can be interlinked
in a reconstructive social theory.

*Frederic Vandenberghe* is professor of sociology at the State university
of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. He did his PhD at the EHESS in Paris in 1994
on theories of reification in German sociology. He works at the
intersection of German social philosophy, Anglo-Saxon social theory and
French sociological theory. He has published books in French, English and
Portuguese which include *What's Critical about Critical Realism? *(2014)
and *A Philosophical History of German Sociology* (2009).

*Aditya Nigam *is Professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing
Societies.
