The ephemeral nature of data in electronic media and the hybrid,
de-centered selves that users construct and experience in cyberspace
resonate with the Buddhist notion of *anātman* or no-self. This talk will
explore the unparalleled power of the Internet to problematize the
boundaries of the self and thereby highlight some key Buddhist ideas.
*Daniel Veidlinger* is a professor of comparative religion at California
State University, Chico with a focus on Asian religions and media studies.
He is the author of *Spreading the Dhamma: Writing, Orality and Textual
Transmission in Buddhist Northern Thailand* and has recently co-edited the
volume *The Pixel in the Lotus: Buddhism, the Internet and Digital Media*.
He is currently completing a book to be titled *From Indra’s Net to
Internet: Communication, Technology and the Evolution of Buddhism* that
examines the effects of changing media on Buddhism from the oral period of
ancient Magadha to the Internet of today.
*Ravikant* is Assistant Professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing
Societies.
