Pauperism and pauperization are two of the most persistent and widespread
phenomena in India. While a fierce debate rages on the line separating the
poor from the non-poor, there is scant discussion on the huge mass of
paupers-not less than one-fifth of the country’s population-living in
destitution. The ideology of discrimination and exclusion is back with a
vengeance the world all over and not least in India. The lecture examines
poverty and inequality through a sociological-anthropological lens that
goes beyond the quantitative and unravels the fuzzy landscape of the
informal economy. It fills a conspicuous gap in the literature on casual
labour-that on the ‘floating’ and ‘footloose’ transient labour.
*Jan Breman* is professor emeritus of comparative sociology at the
University of Amsterdam and Honorary Fellow of the International Institute
of Social History in Amsterdam. He is the author of several books which
include *Outcast Labour in Asia: Circulation and Informalization of the
Workforce at the Bottom of the Economy* (2010); *The Poverty Regime in
Village India* (2007)and *Labour bondage in West India *(2007).
*Sabyasachi Bhattacharya* is former professor at Jawaharlal Nehru
University, and previous Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati University.
