The talk looks at the growth of automobile traffic and the continuing
importance of cart transport in central and western India during the
depression period. Diverging interests and social relations over transport
modes are analysed to show that anti-automobile protests and modernizing
aspirations overemphasized the transformative effects of motorized
transport.

*Stefan Tetzlaff* is a postdoctoral fellow based at the South Asia Studies
Centre in Paris (EHESS-CNRS). Stefan’s main research interests in the
history of capitalism, technology and labour are reflected in his current
research on Indian automotive engineering and technology cooperation since
the 1940s. Before this, he studied South Asian history, political science
and comparative literature in Berlin and New Delhi, and completed a
doctorate in medieval and modern history in Göttingen.
