What is the interplay between popular culture and policy issues? Learn during our and Carnegie India's “Cinema, culture and policy,” series discussion on foreign evacuations, featuring the movie “Airlift” at the #AmCenterND.


This discussion on diaspora issues as an extension of foreign affairs will focus on emergency operations to evacuate Indians abroad, how they are depicted in movies, and challenges for foreign policy. To illustrate these operations, the discussion will feature passages of the movie “Airlift” (2016) and the testimonies of officials involved in the 1990 rescue of more than one hundred thousand Indian nationals out of the Gulf region.

- Ambassador Harish Dogra, Former Joint Secretary, Special Co-ordination Unit, Kuwait; coordinated the 1990 evacuation of Indian citizen from Jordan
- Captain Arvind Kathpalia, Director (Operations), Air India; pilot during 1990 airlift and coordinated Air India flights during the 2015 Operation Raahat in Yemen
