In the context of the debate of software and medicine I would say some thing
First of all we need to see that health is such an issue most of the people
suffers from insecurity about health. Slightest negligence may result in
fatal consequence. Thus on every slightest doubt people rush to doctors. But
like doctors, people also rush to many other things out of insecurity.
Spirituality, witchcraft, astrology etc. are such things [though people go to
these people for other insecurities also]. The ever-increasing insecurity
gives space for specialists and their politics. But at the same time lack of
knowledge of layman pushes them to be dependent on specialists. If we say
that more and more people are becoming dependent on doctors but at the same
time more and more people are also becoming dependent on witchcraft,
astrology etc. And between all kinds of specialists, dependencies are always
shifting from one to another. And even between different practitioners of one
form of specialist. Like same person visits many doctors or/and godmen
simultaneously.

Similarly, lifeline of commercial mode of production is in perpetual panic
thus it looks for remedies for fast and smooth production. They also rush
between different forms of management strategies and management gurus. Even
they also depend on gamble of oracle. But like good doctors when they get one
efficient production process they religiously stick to that. In such cases
Microsoft products are successful. They provide easy solution to fast
production line.

But in the life outside insecurity of health and career and panic of
capitalist production there are many spaces where fast sure out put is not
celebrated. There lies the fun of living, creation and social sharing. The
colours of success and failure have same tone. Perfection is passion not
imposed. There comes Abyword, which crashes [unfortunately Apache, Gimp etc.
works perfectly] but creates a community of sharing that flourishes. Who
knows that some day this may reflect on health and professional specialists
vanish out of insecurity!! Share the beer and live. Cheers.

Joy
