CSDS-SARAI - Independent Fellowship 2004

Hindi Localization of KDE

2nd Posting

Update on KDE Hindi translations.

About KDE , KDE is one of the most popular GUI desktops around for
*nix (variants of Unix). With a worldwide team of several hundred
volunteers, it has been in development for more that 5 years. KDE
supports more than 40 languages and recently started supporting Indian
Languages since version 3.2 .

As part of Hindi localization work at IndLinux we started translation
of KDE user interface to Hindi. We used part of fellowship support to
compensate our Hindi translator , Ravishankar Shrivastava , and he did
a great job of translating 80% of KDE GUI ( that is about 49,000
strings out of total of 61,000 ) in 3 months. Previously he was
working on GNOME translations.

Having achieved 80% of translations , next step is to do a full UI
review, wherein all the translations will be checked for consistency
and accuracy. We would also have couple of user sessions, will
prospective users, espcially those who have not used a computer
interface before. Feedback will be taken and assimilated accordingly
in the translations.

For the next month active area of work would be review of translations
done, usability tests and building the translation database will be
serve as a reference for translators. Also in development is the KDE
Hindi livecd , a bootable CD with KDE Hindi interface for users to try
out without installing on a harddisk.
