*To Burqa with my Father*
by RANDA ABDEL-FATTAH
"As soon as we arrived we were overwhelmed to find that here a person's
roots were all that counted. From the hotel concierge in Jerusalem, to
the people that sat beside us in the buses we rode, everybody here
understood that there is dignity in being able to claim heritage; in
being able to derive identity from an olive tree, a rocky hill, a
winding mountain road." RANDA ABDEL-FATTAH travels to the Palestinian
village her father was forced to leave 35 years ago.

*Friendly Fire*
by MARNI CORDELL
Douglas Wood is not the first Australian to be kidnapped by insurgents
in Iraq -- and escape. SBS Journalist John Martinkus was outside the
Australian Embassy in Baghdad last year when he was taken at gunpoint by
Sunni militants and held for 20 hours. On his return to Australia his
terrifying experience was publicly undermined by both the Minister for
Foreign Affairs, and large parts of the Australian media. "The
Australian Government tried to discredit me because my assessment of the
situation in Iraq was directly contradictory to theirs," he tells MARNI
CORDELL.

*Behind the 'Boom'*
by EVE VINCENT
On June 3, mining heavyweight BHP Billiton concluded the biggest
corporate takeover in Australia's history, assuming formal control over
WMC Resources with a cool $9.2 billion bid. According to the business
pages, BHP Billiton couldn't have acquired the world's largest uranium
deposit -- Olympic Dam mine, at Roxby Downs in South Australia -- at a
better time. Signature talks to DAVE SWEENEY, anti-nuclear campaigner
with the Australian Conservation Foundation about the Australian uranium
mining industry. more

Funafuti, the main island of Tuvalu, surprises you as it emerges out of

LONESOME HOME*
by DAN RULE
Having written and released three acclaimed records whilst living in LA

Grant Conspiracy, Hayden, Paul Kelly, Richard Buckner and Joanna Newsom

it' overseas. But after six years abroad, will the Melbourne
singer-songwriter's lo-fi country arrangements and classic American
musical sensibilities manage to have the same impact in his hometown?
Dan Rule investigates.
